  • Translate.co.in Development Update

As many of you know – I have been working hard this month developing Translate.co.in – a domain I recently won in an auction at Bido.com. I had originally set a goal of July 1st for completion of this project but it looks like it is going to take a bit longer. With development this can easily happen and in the end I need to give myself more time to allow the site to really be all that it can be. So I thought this would be a great time to follow-up on yesterday’s post and discuss how to set goals and then what to do if something takes longer than you expect.

First – when a project takes longer than you expect – don’t think of this as a negative. At the end of the day I approach all my projects with the same motto – “Got a job big or small, do it right or not at all.” One thing I tell new investors is that if you have a development project and it isn’t complete at the time you expected – don’t just put-up what you have and say, “well that was the best I could do given the time I set aside for the project.” All businesses have delays and at the end of the day – these delays oftentimes allow for a better product in the end.

Something like this also helps you learn to think on your feet a little quicker and decide how to prioritize things differently to accomodate change. The first step to ensuring your project gets done is to make a list of what you have finished, and what you still need to get done:

    Finished:
    - Logo Design
    - Site Design
    - Articles Section
    - Contact Us Section
    - Online Resources Section
    - Coding of Translation System

    Outstanding Items:
    - Translation services section
    - Learn a language section

Once you have your list you know what you have achieved and what is left to get done. Now out of the outstanding items is there any item that will take longer because you are waiting on another resource? In my case the “Translation Services” section is taking longer than expected as I am working to establish business relationships with existing translation services in India. The same is true for the “Learn a Language” section because I am also working on developing relationships with these companies as well.

The next step is setting the new completion date. In this case I think I will need an extra 2-3 weeks to really get the site to where I want it. Remember, it is okay to miss your goals as long as you are doing so to create a better product in the end. The point here is that you should still have a new goal and a plan on exactly how you are going to achieve it. Over the next 2-3 weeks I will continue to reach-out to organization in India to see what partner services I can get to work with my site.

I would much rather provide my site visitors with valuable resources rather than simply performing a quick Google search and posting whatever I can find on my site. I hope that when I finish this site it is something that people in India will find both useful and informative.

The next step in project management is determining how this will impact other projects. In the case of my monthly website development I have decided to focus on remodeling one of my existing sites – DomainingLibrary.com. This is a project that will only take one weekend day and thus will give me plenty of time in July to continue building relationships with translation and language-service companies in India.

At the end of July I plan to have Translate.co.in up and running and a nice new version of Domaining Library ready as well. No matter what project you are working on it is essential that you have a plan and are willing to adapt that plan to ensure that at the end of the day you put-out the best product possible. Apple, Sony, and Microsoft are three BIG companies that have dramatically delayed MAJOR product releases – but they did it so that the product would be better when they finally released it.

Never release anything when it is only 90% of the way there – stick to my motto – it has always worked for me: “Got a job big or small, do it right or not at all!”

Thanks for reading and if you’re looking for more inspiration – don’t forget to read my book!

  • Lessons in Domaining: The Importance of Focus

When I started in the Domaining industry I found myself with hundreds of domain names and the constant pressure of developing, parking, or selling my names as quickly as possible. What I learned very quickly was that many of the names I thought were worth thousands were worthless, and that developing a quick site vs. a good site made a huge difference. At first this was a depressing realization – I had just wasted hundreds of dollars on domain names that nobody wanted and I found that to really make money with my domains I had to put a lot of time and energy into developing a website.

This is the realization I had two years ago and over the past 24-months I can say it was the best learning experience I’ve ever had. If you find yourself in the same situation the first thing I can tell you to do is: stop, walk-away from your computer, pull-out a notepad and make a plan.

When I realized the situation I was in I knew that I had to make changes in order to turn this into a lucrative business rather than a renewal nightmare. So I did exactly what I’m telling you know – I left my computer and pulled-out a yellow notepad. On the notepad I created three headlines, each one on a different page.

    1-Year Goal:

    2-Year Goal:

    3-Year Goal:

Under each of these I wrote the high-level goals I had for the next three years. Mine looked something like this:

    1-Year Goal:
    - Let all the garbage-domains drop or sell them if possible
    - Start a blog
    - Build one high-quality website each month

    2-Year Goal:
    - Buy domain names with strong keywords similar to other domains that have recently sold
    - Continue to focus on making a great blog
    - Build one high-quality website each month
    - Sell one domain name each month
    - Sell any domains that I do not believe in or would consider dropping

    3-Year Goal:
    - Buy domain names with strong keywords similar to other domains that have recently sold
    - Continue to focus on making a great blog
    - Build one high-quality website each month
    - Sell one domain name each month
    - Make over $x,xxx/month consistently

Making a three-year plan is absolutely essential because it takes you out of the overwhelming place that many of us find ourselves and allows you to focus on your high-level goals. I have stuck to my plan and am getting ready to start year three. Now don’t take this for more than it is – I am not an Internet Millionaire or a Dot Com mogul. Instead I’m someone who has a passion for what they do and I’ve stuck to my goals. I am making a consistent monthly income with domain names and in an economy like this – anything consistent is pretty incredible!

So for those of you out there with a huge portfolio of domains, spending each day completely overwhelmed and feeling like there is nothing you can do – stop! Step-away from your computer, pick-up a pen, pencil, quill, whatever it is that you write with – and make a plan. After just 10-15 minutes of writing down your goals you’ll find yourself more relaxed and most importantly – focused on what you have to do to reach your goals.

There is a entire half of 2009 that is yet to happen – make the second half of this year a time in your life that you can look-back on and say – “that was when I took control, focused, and reached my goals!”

  • Track Keywords Like a Pro – Introducing Trendrr

Today I was reading one of my favorite blogs (AVC) and found a very interesting post about a new keyword-tracking service called Trendrr. As you all know I’m a big fan of keyword analysis and SEO optimization so I am always on the lookout for new tools that can help me get an edge in SEO.

So what exactly is Trendrr? It is a online tool that allows you to track keywords across multiple data sets. This means that rather than just using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to track Google search trends, I can also track trends across a number of different sources like Twitter, Bing, Google, YouTube, Google Blog posts, and the list goes on. It is like using a keyword analysis tool for all the major services online without having to access each one individually!

Below is a screenshot of what the main tracking page looks like – as you can see there are a TON of services that you can track keyword trends with.

    trendrrr1

I’m still learning the basics of this tool so am not professing to be an expert by any means yet. This week I’ll play around with it a bit more and let you know how it can be applied to SEO. I have been waiting for a tool like this to come on the market for some time now so I am excited about getting my hands dirty learning the inner-workings – and heck – in the end hopefully it will help me – and you – make more money with our Domains!

Have you used Trendrr before – share your thoughts or expertise! Not familiar with keyword analysis? Don’t forget to read my article on creating a domain investment and learn how I use keywords to make money with domain names!

  • Domainvestors.tv Weekly Video: Don’t Be Afraid – Let Them Drop!

In this video I talk about the importance of identifying which domains in your portfolio are good investments and which are simply wasting your money in yearly registration fees. Oftentimes new domain investors will become excited by the industry and register hundreds of domain names, then when a year goes by they renew the name without thinking about it as an investment.

Domain Investing, like stock investing, involves taking the time to properly analyze your portfolio and determine which domains are good investments. Remember, at the end of the day you want to be a Domain Investor, not a Domain Collector!

  • Domain Development 101: FTP Basics

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a network protocol used to transfer files to and from computers on the Internet. Whether you are new to Domaining or a seasoned Domainer getting started with development it is essential that you understand the basics of FTP and in a few painless paragraphs – you will!

Disclaimer: If you already know FTP – skip this post. This post was created for users that are unfamiliar with FTP.

FTP is most frequently used in the Domaining/Domain Development space to upload files to a web server. If you have an account with GoDaddy, Moniker, Name.com, etc. and you wish to host websites on your domain then you will need to create a hosting account. Many registrars offer hosting package and I would highly recommend GoDaddy and tell you to absolutely avoid 1&1. You shouldn’t spend more than $5/month on hosting and most of these services will offer far more than you will ever use – but it’s good to have the potential if you really get inspired by development.

Once you have created a hosting account you will want to build a website for one or many of your domains. Usually the first step is logging-into your hosting account (through your web browser) and specifying a domain name and a place on your web server that you would like the website to reside. This will usually be a directory – something like “/site_name“. In this first step you will be setting-up a link between your domain and a directory on the web server. This means that when someone goes to www.yoursite.com – you want them to see the website stored on your webserver at “/site_name”.

So now your domain is pointing to a directory on your web server – but that’s just an empty folder! To display a website you will need to put HTML files, images, maybe even some PHP and CSS files into that directory. If you don’t want to write code yourself you can always use a tool like Dreamweaver to generate websites without writing a line of code. Once you have created a website you need to put the files for the website into the directory for your site on the web server. This is where FTP comes in.

You will use an FTP client (I’d highly recommend Fetch for the Mac and Filezilla for the PC) to move the files that constitute your website from your computer to your web server. When you created your hosting account with your hosting provider you most likely made an FTP username and password – if not go back to their site and create a FTP username and password – you’ll need this to upload files to your web server.

Now all you have to do is open your FTP client and enter your website address as the server and then the FTP username and password you created with your hosting provider. Using the FTP client you will create the folder you specified in the first step (i.e. make a folder called “site_name”). Make sure you are in the root directory of your web server – this is usually “/” and thus the directory you will upload your files to is “/site_name” – the directory you specified your domain should point to. Once in this directory you will upload your website – which simply means taking the files from your computer and transferring them onto your web server.

That’s it! Once your website is uploaded to the server, visitors to www.yoursite.com will see your website. Now you know the basics of FTP – an essential tool to understand if you want to start developing some of those domains in your portfolio. Don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions, comments, or just want to pledge your new love for FTP.

  • Translate.co.in Gets a Facelift

As a developer it is not uncommon to design something that you think it great one night and terrible the next. This happened to me today with Translate.co.in. I’ve been buried in code lately working on the translation API calls (thank you Google!) and took a look at the site and decided that it was time for a facelift.

When I need inspiration I usually read articles online about User Interface Design and Graphic Design to understand what elements my site might be missing. One article I was reading mentioned the importance of images with “eye contact” to draw-in the user. So I headed over to iStockPhoto to see what images I could find that might be applicable to the site. I found a great image but realized I still needed to do more.

The background color was also starting to bother me so I experimented with different colors and decided that dark-gray looked the best with the current color-scheme I was working with.

Along with a new look-and-feel the “Articles” section is now complete. This time – rather than spending hours writing the articles myself I scoured the net for royalty-free articles and found some great articles that I could include on the site as long as I gave proper credit to the author. This not only allows me to save a lot of time on the project – but also allows my visitors to read articles written by an expert in the topic (actually wrote a book about learning languages) rather than by me who is definitely not an expert in learning languages.

Now for the before and after:

    BEFORE

    translate_before

    AFTER

    translate_after

If you’ve been following-along with this project you know I plan to finish this by the end of June – so watch-out folks – Translate.co.in will be a reality before you know it! I’m excited to provide a valuable resource to the Indian market.

Wondering where the ads are? I’m going to be designing the entire site first and then adding in the ads. The focus of the site should be content and useful services for the visitors so this is the main focus here – as it should be!

Let me know what you think!

  • Run your Domaining Business on a Mac

For those who know me – you know that I’m a die-hard Mac fanatic. In fact, most people that use Apple Computers tend to be fanatical about their computers. This does not mean that I can’t stand PC’s – I have three PC’s at home – two running windows and one running Linux. I run my Domaining business from two Macs – one desktop and one laptop and have always found Mac OS to be a great platform for Domaining. Multiple desktops is definitely one of my favorites as I can have one desktop for my browser, one that always has an excel spreadsheet with my domains, another with a text editor open to my latest HTML/CSS/PHP project, and a fourth desktop with my FTP client.

As you know I do video posts for my blog and have to say that iMovie is an incredible piece of software that is easy to use and generates high-quality movies quickly and easily. I’ve always loved the fact that Apple includes almost all the software you need pre-installed on the computer. The only additional software you really need to buy is Adobe Photoshop but you can also use GIMP if you want a free alternative.

The best thing about Mac OS is – stability! My background is in Computer Engineering (my graduate degree) so I definitely consider myself to be a power-user. My PC’s crash all the time and when I uninstall software I find lingering DLL’s that haunt my computer forever. Neither of my Macs crash – ever. It’s true – it has never happened. When you are working on many projects at once using multiple desktops and having stable software makes life easy. Yes – there are pieces of software that allow you to use multiple desktops on a PC but they aren’t as elegant or responsive as “Spaces” which is built-into Mac OS.

Mobile Me and TimeMachine are great for backing-up your data both on a hard disk and online. If my house burns to the ground tomorrow – or more likely an earthquake destroys it (I live in LA!) – all my data is backed-up online so I won’t lose a thing! Yes there are services out there like Mozy, but once again, the elegance and ease-of-use of MobileMe makes it unbelievably easy to backup and access your data from anywhere and sync it with a Mac, PC, iPhone, etc.

As a Linux geek at heart I also love that I can open a terminal window at any time and type-in Unix commands as well as run any Linux or Unix app natively in the OS. Yes – there are Unix-emulators you can run within windows but Mac OS is Unix with a window manager called Aqua sitting on top of it – thus you get all the reliability of Unix memory management combined with the ease-of-use that Apple is famous for. Like I said – I do have a Linux-box at home, but the Mac is far easier to interact with than Linux – especially when you just want things to work, flawlessly every day – Linux is great if you like tinkering though!

Now, Apple is probably only a few weeks away from releasing a tablet that will revolutionize the way we use computers, just like the iPod revolutionized the way we listened to music. I had a number of friends who were very anti-Apple when the iPod came-out. They resisted and bought competing devices initially – now they all have iPhones and iPod touches and many of them have gone Mac and never looked back. Apple is an innovative company, and Domaining is an innovative industry. If you don’t mind spending the extra money – in the end the reliability, ease-of-use, and great build-in features like Spaces and TimeMachine make the Mac a great platform for any Domaining business.

Share your comments – are you a Mac-lover or hater? Is Vista your dream OS or has Leopard won you over?

  • Weekly Video: Are you ready for the .co Revolution?

.co is the TLD for Colombia and starting June 23rd 2009 the bidding will begin for who will bring this TLD public. This is most-likely the most anticipated ccTLD ever and it will change the Domaining community forever. With the potential of buying domains with strong type-in traffic as many did in the late 90’s once again new Domainers can get-in early.
